Hey there!
Welcome back! If it is your first time here welcome! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I hope you find value here.
For those of you who do not know me, I am a full-service portrait and branding photographer located in Terre Haute, IN. I enjoy helping my clients figure out the details, so they don't have to stress over it. One thing that can be stressful is figuring out clothing for a session. I have some tips for you.
If you are my client, you know I help you through this stressful process. I have 5 tips. They are pretty simple, but they are often overlooked.
TIP #1: CHOOSE YOUR COLOR
Now you might be wondering what does that mean? Or duh I'm going to choose a color.
But I mean YOUR color.
Everyone has a color that brings out the best side of them.
Do you have a color that makes you look fabulous? A color that everyone says you look great in? A color that makes you feel great?
What about your child? What color looks good on your child? What color lights them up?
Find clothing in the color that brings out you and/or your child's best.
This is a little extra tip for you, mamma. If you are having family pictures taken, choose your outfit or color first and coordinate everyone else off of your preference. Starting with one color or outfit is a great starting point.
TIP #2: CHOOSE A MATERIAL YOU FEEL GOOD IN
Just because it is pretty on the rack does not mean in will be a good option.
Some things you see in the store may catch your eye and be beautiful but terribly uncomfortable. Comfort is something to consider when picking out clothing.
Find a material that feels good. The way the material feels on your skin can make you feel amazing or like you are being clawed or bond. Choose wisely.
It's hard to relax and not be awkward when you feel like you are being tortured. Wearing clothing that you feel great in will make all the difference in how well your portraits look. Children hate being uncomfortable! If you want your child's portraits to be great, find something that they are comfortable in.
TIP #3: CHOOSE LIGHT OR DARK, DO NOT MIX
This is a general rule. It can be broken and successful but be careful.
Dark clothing is great if you are wanting something sliming.
Light clothing is great at drawing your eye to the subject.
Mixing them can cause someone to look out of portion. Let's face it, no one wants that, right? When picking out different parts of your outfit, try to keep to the same lightness or darkness.
Look at the image above. See how on the left the colors are different but they all are light and go well together? On the right the shirts are all dark but have a variety of color. You can be creative and still keep to this rule.
There are also some technical things with the camera, but for time's sake let's just say the camera sees the two differently. If you are planning family portraits, try to keep everyone's outfits close to the same lightness or darkness.
TIP #4: DO NOT WEAR WHITE SHOES
Did you know your eye goes to the lightest part of an image?
Look at the image above. What do you see first? What do your eyes keep going back to? The white shoes, right? Not the beautiful camera in the center. Did you even notice the camera?
If your shoes are white or the lightest part of your outfit, that is where your eyes will go. Try to keep your shoes darker than your clothing.
TIP #5: WEAR THE OUTFIT BEFORE THE SESSION
If you get new outfits for your session, wear them around. This is really important for your children.
Does it wear well? Is there anything about the outfit that annoys them or you? Can the poses you like be done comfortably?
Sometimes we think, I love this dress it will so cute for the session. However, when we get to the session, we find in hard to sit or do some things we were excited about. Or our child complains about the way the shirt fits or how the pants are bothering them. When they are uncomfortable you can tell in the portraits.
Wearing the clothes after you buy them and before the session can help limit the hiccups that may come with outfit decisions.
It can be so frustrating and stressful when deciding on an outfit/s for a portrait session.
Keep these 5 tips in mind and it will make it much easier.
