Hello there!
Welcome to the blog! Fall sessions are starting soon and I thought I would help you out with 3 tips on having a great session with children. Most families like to update their portraits in the fall. The beautiful fall colors make a great background!
It can become quit a task when it comes to getting your children's portraits taken. Sometimes they don't want to cooperate. You may find your child is not cooperating when they are uncomfortable. Preparing your child for the session is a great way to make sure the session goes smoother.
Below I have 3 tips to help you get your child ready for the session, so they are comfortable and have a great time at the session.
1. GET YOUR CHILD/REN EXCITED FOR THE UPCOMING SESSION
There are many ways to get your child/ren excited to have their portrait taken. You know how to get your child excited but here are a few ideas:
Talk about how fun it is to have your picture taken. If they see that you like it they will think it is great! Tell them about some fun times you have had getting your portrait taken. Tell them how good it made you feel.
Play around by posing with them. Kids will get a kick out of acting like they are modeling. Get goofy with it and make it fun.
Play with a camera. Kids get their picture taken all the time with phones. I have had a mother mention "She does great with my phone. We take pictures all the time". Yes they can see themselves on the screen. They know what to do because they can see themselves during your selfie sessions. The younger children may not understand the camera and get nervous or confused.
Sit down with them and show them portraits that were taken of you, your family and even them when they were younger. They will enjoy seeing them and it will give you another opportunity to talk about how fun getting your portrait taken can be.
2. MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE THE SESSION
Some photographers will have a consultation with you. It is a great way to get to know each other and get the details of your session hashed out. It is even more helpful when children will be photographed. Especially children who are shy or nervous around people they do not know. If they meet the photographer before the session they will be more comfortable with them. Showing up early to the session and allowing the photographer interact with them before you start is great. Ask your photographer if they would be willing to do this.
3. PLAN FOR A TREAT OR A FUN ACTIVITY AFTER THE SESSION
We all have done it; used bribery to motivate our children. Plan a treat or something they enjoy after the session. Let them know when they do a great job what they get to do after the session. Whenever they get distracted or restless during the session, remind them what you have planned for them.
A session should be a fun experience for you and your children. The 3 tips above are what I have found to be helpful in making the session go smoothly.
The photographer can make a big difference in how well your session goes. If they take the time to play and talk to your children, the session will go great and the portraits will be much more authentic. When they have a great time at the session, they will also be excited to do it again when you schedule the next session.
Thanks for stopping by the blog! I hope these tips help you with your next session with your children.
I would love to talk to you about how I can make your session experience fun and stress-free.
